Understanding the Grading/Levels of Band MusicOften, younger students (mostly 6th graders and some 7th graders) come into my classroom and think that because they’ve been playing for 2, 3 or more years, they have encountered everything there is to learn and know about the instrument they play. Some of it is kids (and parents) simply thinking they know more than they really do.the rest of it is simply a lack of information. So I’ve developed this page to give students and parents a bit of information on exactly what every child should be learning (and will be learning) as they move along through the music education program in my district. The good thing is, a lot of what I write here is the general pattern of instrumental music education across the board.Students need to understand (especially when making that transition from elementary to middle school and middle to high school) that instrumental music is designed to be an ongoing growth process for the student from elementary through high school graduation and beyond. It is not simply an extracurricular activity scheduled as a class.

If you approach it this way, you will probably fail the class (as you ‘do’ extracurricular activities based on how you feel about them) and not learn very much.Music is typically (in most district systems) ‘graded’ by difficulty level – usually a 5 or 6 level system. The system I am using is based off of what is generally accepted in the state of Maryland (which grades 1-5). I’ve included “.5” ratings as well (the state of Maryland does not) to show the difference even in lower level music and what it requires each student to be able to do.Some of these grades of music are subjective. For example, there are some songs that are labelled as a grade 2 in Virgina that are considered a grade 1 in Maryland.5 or 1/2Elementary school students with less than a year of playing experience, all new playersMeter: 4/4, 3/4, 2/4Key: Bb, EbTempo: Andante to Allegro (70-120 bpm)Tonality: Major with a few trips to the relative minor tonalityRhythm: quarter, half, whole, dotted half note, eighth notes, most notes move in thirds and steps.
