Randy Newman The Natural

First, I'll just throw a bunch of links to Randy Newman songs:If you listen to a song from him, you can instantly tell its his just from the style. Forget about the lyrics, or his voice, forget about the instrumentation, etc. Just by the rhythm and chord progressions you can tell its Randy Newman. For instance, you can tell that this It's always Sunny in Philadelphia song is imitating his style instantly, there's just some quality that makes his music super distinctive. His music is pop, but its jazzy, its bluesy, its folky, its got a little pinch of everything. I'd like to know a bit more specifically what musical resources, tools, scales, chord substitutions, etc, he tends to use that make his music so recognizable. I'd like to be able to improvise in his style (I play the piano, have for 12 years), so I'm looking for some cues into what I should look into.
